The school's specialization is centered on a science and technology based curriculum. In an effort to help students prepare to live in an age of exploding knowledge and rapid change in technology information, the school's specialization answers the need for computer technology and internet access for our urban student population.
Within the core science strands offered by grade level, students deepen their knowledge of the world around them through the study of earth science, life science, and physical science. With in interdisciplinary courses, also offered by grade level, students explore real-life applications through problem solving projects, project which integrates Science with Technology, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Communications.
Technology is an integral component of Truth School.Students enjoy the benefits and challenges of using technology to generate research information, analyze data, and produce final work products. Our state-of-the-art facilities include two fully equipped computer labs that afford students opportunities to explore learning by using technology in a number of ways.
In Computer Technology, students develop technical skills in computer applications and in web building. Through other applications in computer-aided drafting and video production, students design products and projects to simulate the work setting.
Additionally, students partake in hands-on learning investigations that integrate the central school theme with other non-science disciplines. Students participate in numerous projects such as an annual science fair, a letter writing project for resources from governmental agencies, an internet research project, and statistical analysis which focus on the scientific data as well as data related to the socioeconomic costs associated with science research and monitoring. Students are actively engaged in producing instructional videos and televising on the local education channel.
In addition to Science and Technology, Truth School has an African-Centered Studies model. Through our Social Studies Department, African-Centered Studies is offered. Students are exposed to courses that provide them with a broad understanding of the African experience. On the sixth grade level, African American History I is offered. On the seventh grade level, Nile Valley Contributions to civilization is offered. On the eighth grade level, African American History II is offered.Our African-Centered studies courses enable Truth students to develop and sustain a keen sense of awareness and understanding of which they are, collectively speaking, both historically and culturally.
The Language Arts Department provides a component that is comprised of speaking and writing. On the sixth and seventh grade levels, the craft of writing, speaking, and debate enable student to receive concentrated exposure to the art of public speaking, debate and all facets of writing speeches. Eighth grade students receive insightful instruction through the craft of writing.
Sojourner Truth provides students with an opportunity to compete on a local and National level. Every year student's enter and win several competitions.Competitions include Associated Essay Contests, Local Art/Poster Contests, District Science Fair, North Jersey Spelling Bee, Public Speaking Competitions, and National History Day to name a few.
Our goal is to produce a student that is conscious of who he/she is, competitive, and ready to take on a leadership role in today's technological society.
